How To Achieve Any Goal

The road is long, the mountain is high and standing at the very beginning it can seem a bit daunting. When faced with a mountain to climb we often ask ourselves questions like: “How on earth am I ever going to do this?”. We all have big dreams and big goals and they all require large amounts of money to achieve. “I’ll never be able to afford it” is a common thought to have in these circumstances. Here are three simple steps we can use to achieve our goals (financial or otherwise):

  1. Get started: Making a start is the most important thing. A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. Even if we need to be saving R 500 per month to reach our goal: R 500 per month is better than standing still and doing nothing. Even a small amount is a massive step towards our goal.

  1. Consistency: After we’ve taken the first step, we cannot afford to stop and start or go backwards: we need to continue to put one foot in front of the other: come whatever may. Relentless forward progress. This means putting that money away month after month and year after year, without fail.

  1. Use every opportunity to improve Every lump sum, bonus, windfall or salary increase that comes our way is an opportunity to take big steps towards our goal. These opportunities are a tailwind that will speed our progress to our destination: if we let them.

R500 per month (Getting started) every month for 35 years (Consistency) increasing with inflation (6%) each year and invested in a portfolio that could grow at inflation +3% (9%) (Use every opportunity to improve) will grow to over R2.6 million. R2.6 million more than we would have had if we had done nothing.

The journey to achieve our goals is a long and hard one, but I guarantee: If we GET STARTED, put one foot in front of the other with CONSISTENCY and USE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE, we will get there.
